Defending - Individual pressure

Individual Pressure

When the other team has the ball we are all defenders. Defending is all about denying the other team time and space to create goal scoring chances. The film below shows how an individual quickly closes down the opponent receiving the ball to prevent him turning. If you can't win the ball your job is to slow him down so that your team can get back into position and mark up.

Key points to look for:

  1. Get close to your opponent whilst the ball is travelling.
  2. Run very quickly at first and then slow down and be in control when you get nearer.
  3. Stand in a low position slightly turned to the side.
  4. Block off your opponents stronger foot.
  5. Be patient, if you cant get the ball make sure you slow him down.
  6. Try to make your opponent pass backwards or sideways.
