Lots of information on team formations.

Hi Everyone,

This video is jammed packed with information on team formations and there advantages and disadvantages against other formations. What I would like you to notice from the video is:

  1. Every player is involved in defending.
  2. The side of the pitch that the ball is on is crowded with players.
  3. The opposite side to the ball is left free.
  4. The defence always has an extra player than the attacking team.
  5. The defenders stay close together to deny the opponents time and space to pass.

It doesn't matter what formation we decide to use these principles apply in every case.

Tiki Taka Football

You hear me at training banging on about diamond formations and triangles when we have possession of the ball. Watch Barcelona! Diamonds and triangles coming out of their ears.

You hear people talk about "pass and move". I think this phrase should be changed to "move to receive". Watch how the Barcelona players move to help the team mate with the ball give it to them. I call this being "visable". You should move into a position where the team mate with the ball can pass to you without an opponent cutting it out.

Count how many one touch passes they have. Count how many two touch passes they have.

Watch the masters at work.

Barcelona - Not bad at defending either.

Watch this video to see how quickly Barcelona try to win the ball back once they loose it. They call it the 6 second rule.

Watch the video at the 20 second mark. See how they loose the ball but but every single player quickly runs to make the team compact and tight together so that the opponents cant pass through them.

Also, notice how the player on line between their goal and the ball goes to pressure the ball to stop the ball being passed forward and slow the opponent down, and how many times it's a Barcelona player further up the pitch that comes back to pinch the ball.

Working as a team means we win the ball back quicker.

Winning the ball back quicker means less goals against us and more chances to score.

Less goals against and more scoring chances means more wins.

How To Defend Has A Team

Defending = Pressure and Covering

The player nearest the ball and between the ball and our net is the player that should pressure the opponent with the ball. That way, the opponent cant play the ball towards our goal. The other members of our team should move to a covering position and keep an eye on the opponent that they are marking. When covering you should be ready to quickly pressure your opponent when he gets the ball.

Watch this 3D animation to see it in action.

Training for 2nd November 2012

Hi Lads

Tough game coming up this sunday. SO, we have to be at our best and prepared. We will do the same drills that we did on the 19th of October.

Just a little note about the drills. I do not expect you to be able to do the drills perfectly when you come to training. I put them on the blog so that you know what we are going to be practicing. Training is a chance to improve on your game. So don't worry if you look at the drills and think "I cant do that !". The idea is that you will do them better in the coming months not tonight. I have always said, "try to be a little better each week".

If you don't understand anything ask me at training or give me a call on 07929723440 and i'll take you through it. Jordan came to me the other week at training and asked me to explain his positioning a little better. I had 5 or 10 minutes with him off to the side and that was great for me. Showed that he wanted to get better and he was prepared to admit he wasn't quite sure. Well done Jord.

That said watch the drills and remember this: Good footballers play where the ball is, GREAT FOOTBALLERS PLAY WHERE THE BALL IS GOING TO BE!

Here's the link to the drills on the 19th. See you later.

Starting an attack - keeper throwing to full back

Rather than the keeper kicking the ball and both teams fight for it, it is better to throw the ball out to one of the full backs and keep the ball for ourselves.

This short animation shows the movement involved. The full backs should make the run as soon as the keeper as caught the ball and as it under control.

The keeper should only pass to the full back if the full back has the space to receive it.

If the pass isn't on the full backs should come back into a more central position ready for the kick from the goal keeper.

Top Tips

  1. Move to the line as quickly as possible. Opponents often stop playing and lose concentration when their attack breaks down. This is our opportunity to pounce.
  2. Turn and face into the pitch, You can see everything that is happening then.
  3. The keeper should throw the ball into the space just in front of the full back so that he only has to have one touch and is facing up the pitch. Ideally, he may play it first time.
  4. The keepers throw should be as good as a pass from the feet.
  5. The midfield player should recognise the play and move to a wide position to receive the pass from the full back.

Creating Space Drill

This drill works on tricking the defender into thinking you are going one way and then quickly going the other.

Positioning when marking a player

Your position is important when defending. A good defender will stand inline between his opponent and the center of the goal.

Has the attacker moves around, the defender adjusts his position to stay inline with the center of the goal.

Why is this a good position?

  • It stops the attacker going the shortest route towards goal. He has to run around you.
  • If a ball is played in the direction of the goal the defender has the shorter distance to run to get it.
  • The defender is in a good position to put the attacker under pressure if the attacker gets the ball to his feet.
  • The defender can see his opponent and everything thats happening in front of him.

(8) Paul Scholes Legend !

Watch, in my opinion, the best midfield player since the premiership began. Paul Scholes - class player, can do everything - score brilliant goals, long range passing, short range passing, midfield support play etc Not the best at tackling though!!

The reason he's such a good passer of the ball is because he looks for the best option before he gets the ball. His first touch then puts the ball perfectly to play the pass and years of practise gives him the technique to play the pass.

Enjoy the video.
